blank Network Rail commissioned RWA Rail to simulate the performance impact of a doubling of the service frequency between Pontypridd and Merthyr Tydfil on a number of possible enhanced infrastructure options. RWA Rail was asked to develop timetable options and to check whether the proposed infrastructure changes would be sufficient to support the timetable and to prevent a deterioration in performance once the additional services were running.

A RailSys model of the area was created, and set up with both the current and proposed variant timetables. These were calibrated against and run with perturbation data from TRUST, to check for robustness.

The results of the perturbed simulation runs showed that a lower-cost infrastructure option would still facilitate a substantial improvement in performance when compared to today’s railway.

The results of this study will be used by Network Rail to inform infrastructure and signalling design.
